Netflix Questions

In another attempt to join the 21st century, we are thinking about subscribing to Netflix. According to the Netflix website, the service is greatest thing since sliced bread. (Actually, the website proclaims Netflix as "The BEST Way To Rent Movies.") So today’s questions are all about Netflix. If you have/had Netflix, is it worth it? What type of plan do you have? Is Blockbuster better than Netflix? Please feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments section.

Thank you!

Yes. It's awesome. We have the 2-disc-at-a-time plan. The only drawback is that it has increased our consumption of television, but we also don't have cable, so it's kinda fun catching up on full seasons of The Wire and Weeds at once.

Netflix and Blockbuster are SO 20th century.... Not that I've ever had either, but soon you'll be downloading anything you want to watch and Netflix and Blockbuster will be Fotomats of the early 21st century.

Plus, the fact that about one out of every three websites I visit has a Netflix popup ad that someone has gone to great trouble to get past my blocker (and I know they must have because it's the only ad that consistently does it), I wouldn't support Netflix if they sent me a free wide screen TV to watch their movies on.

Netflix is awesome. We were members for about 3 years and even though I am definitely *not* a movie person, it was economical for about 90% of those 3 years. Not to mention incredibly convenient and far more enjoyable than visiting a movie store.

It worked so well for us (for a while) because a) I almost always owe a late fee when I rent a movie in the traditional way, b) having a movie sitting around the house made convincing me to watch it a lot easier for Marc, and c) I love to make lists and organize things (meaning the queue was EXCELLENT).

We had the 3 at a time plan, and it was great. We could have done 2 at a time and not noticed a difference, I believe. We finally cancelled it because we seemed to have moved through the backlog of movies and shows we wanted to see, meaning there was no longer a seemingly endless list of movies we both wanted to watch. Now it makes more sense to run out to Hollywood Video when the mood strikes. Although I still have a deep, deep problem with late fees. Not that the movies stores ever actually make you pay them...

I don't know about Netflix, but we have a Blockbuster.com account that works pretty well for us. We have a the 3 at a time plan and I also like being able to turn the movies in directly at a Blockbuster store to rent a few per month free. The only problem I encounter is when Rob and I disagree about the order of the queue; I'm expecting "27 Dresses" to show up and instead, "The Dresden Files" magically has jumped to the front of the line!

I agree Blockbuster is better. We've had both. Blockbuster is nice, because you can drop off the movie at the store and get a free rental, and still get a new one in the mail.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. We would probably rent TV shows like The Wire, Weeds and Sex & the City (not for me...really!), so going with one of these services probably makes sense financially.

Gilahi - I don't think I'm ready to download movies and shows on my computer. The screen is too small especially if two people are watching it. I do agree with you about the Netflix ads. They are everywhere!

Christine - Are you sure Rob didn't request 27 Dresses? :)
